How to be a team principal in motorsport

The 2024 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival brought together several motorsport identities from various disciplines and backgrounds, with former team principals Guenther Steiner, Paddy Lowe and Roland Dane discussing their varied careers with Charlie Barlow in the Grand Marquee.

Steiner was the team principal of the Haas Formula 1 team from 2016 to 2024, the managing director of Jaguar Racing from 2001 to 2003 and technical operations director of Red Bull Racing, following on from spells with Mazda and Ford in the World Rally Championship. During his tenure as Haas team boss, he also became a star of the Netflix series ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’.

Lowe’s Formula 1 career spanned 32 years, playing a major role in 12 world championships and 158 race wins, with spells at Williams, McLaren and Mercedes – winning drivers’ and constructors’ titles with all three teams.

Dane spearheaded Triple Eight Race Engineering’s arrival and domination of Supercars, winning the drivers' championship 10 times, the teams' championship 11 times and the Bathurst 1000 10 times with both Ford and Holden.
