The late, great Allan Moffat may be best remembered for his time with Ford, but the Canadian-born racer also had championship success with Mazda in the rotary-powered RX-7 in the early 1980s in the latter period of Group C Australian touring cars.

One of the Mazda RX-7’s will be on track in the Heritage Touring Cars category at the 2026 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival, courtesy of car owner/driver Paul Stubber.
In its original Peter Stuyvesant livery, the RX-7 is powered by a 1.3-litre twin-rotor engine, known for its high-revving nature and distinct sound. It was one of the most controversial cars of the Group C era, with Moffat battling the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) in seeking approval to race the RX-7 as an outright Group C contender. Â
The RX-7 raced against the likes of the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and Nissan Bluebird in the Group C era, with Moffat winning the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1983 and finishing on the podium at Bathurst three times.
The Mazda RX-7 joins other classic touring cars in the category, including the likes of Ford Sierras, Holden Commodores and Toranas, BMWs and more.
The 2026 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival will once again feature various categories, ranging from Formula 1 cars, V8 Supercars, sportscars, touring cars, motorbikes, drift cars and more with the action non-stop without a break in track activity at any stage of the day. Off track there will be car displays, kids' zones, bars and food trucks, exhibitors and traders, activations and more, in a picnic in the park setting.
