Valtteri Bottas to drive F1 world champion's Aussie touring car in 2024

Finnish Formula 1 driver Valtteri Bottas will drive an ex-Larry Perkins/Denny Hulme Holden VK Commodore Group A touring car at the 2024 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival on Sunday 17 March.

The Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber racer will be driving the VK Commodore in the Heritage Touring Cars category, alongside other classic Group A and C touring cars.

The VK Commodore was one of the first cars built by the Perkins Engineering team led by former Formula 1 driver and multiple Bathurst winner Perkins, with Perkins joined by 1967 Formula 1 world champion Hulme in the car at endurance events at Wellington and Bathurst. Perkins and Hulme finished first and second in the 1988 Australian Grand Prix Group A support race in Adelaide, in the formative years of Perkins Engineering. The Commodore was the flagship model for Holden for more than 40 years, with manufacturing from its Elizabeth base in South Australia.

Adelaide Motorsport Festival event director Tim Possingham states: “We can't think of a better car for Valtteri at this year’s event. This car was originally made right here in Adelaide at the Holden factory and then went on to be prepared as a Group A touring car. It has some rich Formula 1 history itself with former Formula 1 world champion Denny Hulme racing the car alongside Larry Perkins. We can't wait to see Valtteri push this piece of quintessential 1980s Aussie V8 muscle around the Adelaide Motorsport Festival circuit.”

Other cars Bottas will drive at the 2024 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival will be confirmed at a later date.

Held the week prior to the Australian Grand Prix, the Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival is a museum in motion, displaying historic, rare and significant racing vehicles on the Victoria Park section of the Adelaide Street Circuit.

Categories featuring Formula 1, V8 Supercars, Group C and A touring cars, sportscars and more will feature over the course of the Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival, in addition to on-track demonstrations, off-track displays, villas and more.
